A Bean-Sized Memory

My friend Jen (of scarf fame) gave birth to her first daughter, lovingly nicknamed "Bean", three years ago today.  I was blessed with the opportunity to visit Jen, her husband Shaun, and their new little cutie pie in the hospital only a couple of days after the birth, and it was so great!

Bean was the first - and I guess still the only - baby that I've ever visited in the hospital.  I remember holding her in Jen's basement during a youth group planning session when Bean was about 4 months old.  What I remember clearer than anything else - more than the squishy baby fat and the yummy new baby smell and those wide open, sincere baby smiles - were those huge, deep blue eyes.  Her eyes are now a pretty hazel, but these days I only get to see that through the power of the blogosphere.

I know Bean has no clue who I am, but from the stories I get to read about her every week, I'm sure we'd be fast friends if we got to meet again.  I remember her early babyhood with fondness, but I love to read about the little lady she's turning into.  She's funny, smart, cute, and 100% girl.  I can't wait to see where she's headed and what she's going to be up to in the years to come.

All this is to say that Jen's birthday post about Bean really reminded me of this day, and I wanted to share it with you:

Happy birthday, Bean!  You're such a sweet girl and I know the world loves you!  (And yes, at three days old, she was wearing her first article of winter-wear from me - that yellow hat! ...yeah yeah, I know I used a cheater knitting tool, but hey, she didn't know the difference!)

Aw, Jess! This is GREAT! I got all sorts of teary eyed while reading this!

(And we still have that hat, tucked in a little box to remind me how small of a head that little one used to have. Because now? Now it's pretty big :)

I still can't get over how small she looks with you! She was SMALL once! Crazy!

Youre the best. This made my day!
